Acer launches first Windows 8.1 device at MWC

Liquid M220 is Acer’s cheapest phone in range and marks “right time” for Acer to release a Windows Phone device

Acer unveiled the Liquid M220 at MWC with president of Acer’s smartphone business group ST Liew saying it is the “right moment” to release its first Windows smartphone.

Liew said that the growing popularity and consistency of Windows Phone encouraged Acer to join Microsoft’s ecosystem.

The M220, which Acer is displaying at its booth in Hall 1 at MWC, is a 4 inch smartphone that will initially launch with Windows 8.1, but will be eligible for upgrade to Windows 10.

It has a 4-inch display with 233 pixels per inch, 512MB RAM, 8GB storage, 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200 processor, 5MP rear and 2MP front cameras, and is expected to be available in April for around $79 (No UK pricing available).

“With the addition of a Windows-based smartphone, Acer now offers the broadest Windows portfolio in the industry,” Liew added
