Manufacturer opens up software development kit to third party developers for next wearable device and hints at round watch face
Samsung has hinted that the next generation of its Gear smart watch will come with a round face after launching a software developer kit for the seventh generation Gear.
The Korean manufacturer released a teaser for its next wearable device on Friday, the day that the Apple Watch went on sale, with an image of a round face. Previously, the manufacturer has only released square smart watches.
Motorola, Huawei, LG and Alcatel Onetouch have all released smartwatches with circular designs, while the Pebble Steel and Watch are both square.
The tease came as Samsung announced its new developer kit for the wearable, the seventh generation of the Samsung gear, which was first launched in 2013.
Samsung said this is the first time it has released its developer kit to the global developer community before the official announcement of the wearable. No date was given about when the seventh Gear watch will be released.
“Samsung has actively adapted its approach to wearable device development as the leader of the rapidly developing category,” said Samsung Mobile CEO JK Shin.
“Through meaningful and progressive innovation, Samsung welcomes to developers and industry leaders to join this open collaboration effort to enrich and create unique user experiences for a new smart mobile life.”
