Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact to hit the UK next month, with the Z5 Premium due for global release in November

Sony has unveiled a trio of new high-end smartphones – the Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium.

All major retailers and operators will stock the Z5 and Z5 Compact when they are released in the UK next month. No details have been released on the availability of the Z5 Premium.

The Z5 is powered by quad-core 1.5GHz and quad-core 2GHz processors and has a 5.2-inch touchscreen.

It has a 23 megapixel camera with Sony’s 1/2.3 Exmor RS for mobile sensor and F2.0 G Lens. The camera is capable of autofocus in 0.037 seconds, which Sony claims is the fastest in a smartphone.

There is a front-facing 5.1 megapixel HD camera, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory that can be expanded by up to 200GB with a microSD card and a 2,930mAh battery that can reach 60 per cent charge in 30 minutes.

A new fingerprint sensor power button is on the side and support for the FIDO standard; authentication via fingerprint for online payment services, with the first partners to be revealed closer to launch.

There are also enhancements to the sound quality, with High-Res Audio reproducing high frequency sound for a studio quality experience. For the first time, Sony’s new High-Resolution Audio Headset MDR-NC750 enables users to enjoy combined Hi-Res Audio music with Digital Noise Cancelling, with ambient background noise reduced by up to 98 per cent.

Finally, it comes with Remote Play10 to enable users to keep playing PlayStation 4 games wherever they are at home. They connect the Z5 to the PS4 via home WiFi and use the DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller.

The Xperia Z5 will be available in black, green and gold from the likes of Carphone Warehouse, EE, O2, Vodafone, Three and Virgin. Carphone Warehouse will sell an exclusive ‘Ice White’ variant.

The Xperia Z5 Compact includes the same features as its larger sibling except for a smaller screen (4.6 inches), less RAM (2GB) and smaller battery (2,930mAh).

The black and coral versions of this device will be available from all of the same major mobile retailers and operators. Carphone Warehouse will again stock a white exclusive, with the yellow variant exclusive to O2.

The third of the new handsets is the Xperia Z5 Premium – the world’s first 4k resolution smartphones with a 5.5-inch 4K TRILUMINOS Display for mobile and IPS.

This is the same technology used in Sony’s latest HD televisions, with the manufacturer claiming it is four times the resolution of Full HD.

The Xperia Z5 Premium also upscales media content to 4k, enhancing any native or third party video or photos. Content can also be captured in 4k, with the option of preserving them as an eight megapixel quality photo.

The remaining features are the same as the Z5, except for the battery, which is bigger at 3,430mAh. The Xperia Z5 Premium is due for global release in November, but details on UK availability have yet to be announced.
