IFA: Lenovo unveils 6.8-inch Phablet and first “dual selfie” smartphones


Chinese manufacturer launch Phab Plus, Vibe P1 and Vibe P1m at IFA event despite plans to merge smartphone sector into Motorola

Lenovo unveiled a range of new devices during its IFA launch event including two “selfie” smartphones and a new phablet with a whopping 6.8-inch screen.

The Chinese manufacturer, which bought Motorola last year for £1.82 billion and recently announced plans to merge its smartphone arm into Motorola Mobility, unveiled the Lenovo Phab Plus to a packed hall at the Messe in Berlin.

The Phab Plus is a 6.8-inch phablet (phone/tablet) which Lenovo claim is “optimised” for single-hand usage.

It comes with a dual SIM slot allowing to make calls and connect to 4G, and runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop.

It packs a 13 megapixel camera on the rear, and has a 5MP sensor on the front.

Lenovo claimed the device is optimised for use in one hand, with additional software that includes a double-tap function that turns on the screen automatically, a long-press option that for quick photos and a one-handed keyboard that adjusts to wherever a user’s hand is.

It is powered bya Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core chip with 2GB of memory and comes with a 3,500 mAh battery.

The Phab Plus has 32GB of internal storage, while the body is made from aliminium and will be available in Gunmetal Grey, Titanium Silver and Champagne Gold.

Lenovo said the device will initially go on sale in China, and did not disclose plans to launch in the UK.

Vibe P1 and P1m

Lenovo also unveiled what i called its “first dual-selfie smartphone” with the launch of the Vibe series of devices.

The Vibe P1 is the larger of the two and comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS display, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It has an all metal design.

VIBE P1m_Hero_01Pitched as a mid-range device, it features a 1.5GHz Snapdragon 615 processor and 2GB RAM powered by a huge 5,000 mAH battery.

The rear camera is 13 megapixel and includes phase detection for faster autofocus, while the front camera is 5 megapixel. A fingerprint scanner is also included on the home button.

The Vibe P1m has a smaller 5.0-inch 720p IPS panel and is the lower ranged device. The all-metal finish has been replaced with cheaper polycarbonate plastic that has a ‘nano-coated’ exterior which Lenovo claims will help protect against rain and splashes.

It also comes with a MediaTek MT6735P Quad-Core CPU powering the device, with 2GB RAM included.

It has an eight megapixel rear sensor and five megapixel front camera on the front. The battery is slightly smaller on the P1m, but still has a capacity of 4,000mAh.


Both devices come with expandable memory through a microSD card slot, and run the latest version of the Android software, 5.1 Lollipop.

The Lenovo Vibe P1 is due for release in October and will cost $280, while the the P1m will be available slightly earlier in mid-September for a price of $160.
