Contactless payment service can now be used by those with a compatible device

Google’s contactless payment service is now available for TSB Bank customers in the UK, four months after its initial launch

The UK bank boasts 4.5 million retail customers, who can potentially use Android Pay, provided an Android device with NFC capabilities is used. According to TSB, on average it processes 200,000 contactless purchases a day.

A promotional offer has been launched to mark the occasion. Customers on TSB’s ‘Classic Plus’ current account and the MasterCard credit card can earn up five per cent cash-back on the first £100 of contactless payment, using contactless cards and of course Android Pay.

Those looking to take advantage of Android Pay will have to download the app from the Google Play Store, running Android KitKat 4.4 minimum. A registering procedure follows with a selected payment card, with users then able to wave their smartphones over Chip and PIN machines with the contactless icon.

TSB is the last of confirmed banks to be onboard with Google’s contactless payment service. Recently added were Royal Bank of Scotland, NatWest, Ulster Bank and Santander.

Compatible banks at launch in May were: Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, M&S Bank, MBNA and Nationwide Building Society.

Notably Barclays has refrained from Android Pay, instead launching its own payment service.

According to The UK Cards Association, £1,873.9 million was spent in the UK in May this year using contactless cards. This is an increase of 18.6% on the previous month and an increase of 263.2% over the year.

TSB director of products Jatin Patel said: “Now that Android Pay is available to TSB customers, it means that they can benefit from this secure and convenient way to make purchases should they so choose. We believe customers should be able to bank how, when and where they want – what we call ‘Local Banking on Demand’ – and the launch of Android Pay at TSB further supports this.

“Our customers have enjoyed the added plusness they receive through our 5% cash-back offer on contactless purchases and now they can enjoy this throughAndroid Pay, as well as Apple Pay.”
