Olive branching out from Australia

April 21, 2008

While more and more people are working from home, few are MDs of successful UK companies while based in Australia. Michael Garwood got up early to speak to Olive Communications' Mark Geraghty, who does just that

Olive Communications managing director Mark Geraghty has a peculiar set up.

He moved back to his native Australia the Christmas before last, swapping London’s North Acton for Queensland’s Gold Coast, 10,000 miles away and 11 hours ahead. And yet he keeps UK hours. He starts work at nine in the evening and shuts off his computer at four in the morning.

He jokes: “Since moving away, the business has actually improved. And I find it better because I’m not involved with all the other day-to-day stuff, like customer service; I’m not out on the road all the time, or always occupied with meetings.

“I am in a great position because I have a fantastic team I rely upon and trust. I manage the bigger customer accounts and consultants from here in Australia.”

Geraghty also returns to the UK regularly – last time to attend the Mobile News Awards in March, and see Olive Communications pick up a commendation in the B2B dealer category.

He took the decision to move home to Australia with his wife, a Brit whom he met during a brief stint at Carphone Warehouse in the late 1990s.

“I work in the same way I would if I was in the UK; not in person, but via email and phone. I return to the UK four or five times a year for several weeks at a time to attend events and see clients,” he says.
