Meteor hits 1m landmark

Meteor reached its one millionth customer earlier this month.

Meteor chief executive Larry Smith (pictured right) presented the network’s one millionth customer, Dublin man Keith Hanlon (pictured left), with a prize of €500 (£397) credit every month for the next 10 years.

Hanlon also walked away with a holiday worth €10,000, giving his prize package a total value of €70,000.

Said Smith: “Achieving the millionth customer milestone is a tremendous accomplishment for Meteor. This has been made possible by the dedication and commitment of our staff and the ongoing support from Eircom and our shareholders.

“I would like to thank our one million plus subscriber base, who have supported us throughout the years by choosing Meteor as their mobile operator.”

Launching with 268 employees in 2001, Meteor has since created an additional 550 full time permanent jobs. 

It celebrated its 500,000th customer in November 2005 and has since increased its retail footprint by 50 per cent, with 39 stores across Ireland.

Meteor also launched its new-look mobile internet service on September 4. It is the only Irish network that lets users surf any time for €0.99 a day on prepay, or €9.99 per month on contract.

Exclusive to Meteor, customers can also download content from the band Blizzards, including five ringtones of hits from their new album, Domino Effect. 

The network has also launched €0.03 calls to China as part of its new Anytime International plan, claiming the rate is the best value in the Irish market.

It is designed for the growing number of Chinese migrants living and working in Ireland; now its second largest ethnic community.
