The Canadian manufacturer’s mobile device management software BES 10 and BB 10 smartphones have been approved for use by governments in restricted communications

BlackBerry’s mobile device management software BES 10 has been approved for use by governments for restricted communications, which the Canadian manufacturer has called a “significant milestone”.

According to BlackBerry, BES 10 and smartphones running of its latest operating system, BB 10, have been the first to be approved by intergovernmental military alliance NATO for use in classified communications up to the level of ‘restricted’.

The certification allows agencies in NATO countries across North America and Europe to use BlackBerry 10 smartphones in the office or field.

BlackBerry has said the announcement is a “significant milestone” as it provides assurance to security-conscious organisations, such as government agencies and companies in regulated industries, that data handled by BlackBerry 10 smartphones is strongly secured and encrypted.

Senior vice president of security Scott Totzke said: “We built the new BlackBerry 10 platform from the group up with the highest security needs of our government and enterprise customers in mind.

“The fact that BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 and BlackBerry 10 smartphones have been approved for classified communications just months after debut, is testament to the thoroughness of its design and our commitment to our defense and government customers.”
