GSMA is in talks with local authorities to ensure a proposed transport strike during MWC is called off but claims to have contingency plans in place should these fail

The GSMA says it has “comprehensive contingency” plans in place to deal with a planned strike by transport workers in Barcelona during Mobile World Congress later this month.

The GSMA also says it is meeting regularly with government officials from the City of Barcelona, Catalonia Regional Government, Spanish Ministry of Industry as well the Fira de Barcelona exhibition centre and the police.

It says it has advised all authorities in question they should do everything they can to avert the strike and claims it has been assured all parties are working hard to resolve the issue.

But whatever the case the GSMA says it has firm plans in place to ensure all delegates attending the event will have “unfettered access” to the event, although it is yet to announce what these will be.

“Comprehensive contingency plans are in place to ensure that all participants of the Mobile World Congress have unfettered access to and from the Fira de Barcelona during all days of the event,” the GSMA said in a statement.

“We will announce the details of those contingency plans as necessary should the strike take place. The GSMA remains confident that the issues will be resolved and that there will be little, if any, impact to the Mobile World Congress.”
