Chinese firm will instead attend the annual event virtually

Xiaomi is the latest big hitter to withdraw its physical stand from MWC 2021 in Barcelona at the end of June.

However, the Chinese vendor will still participate in the virtual element of the show. The company cited travel restrictions and safety concerns for its decision to drop out.

A spokesperson for the company added: “Despite the challenging time, Xiaomi will continue to expand its footprint and actively work with industry partners to support the global tech community.”

Xiaomi has joined the list of MWC casualties which includes Samsung, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Sony, Google, and Nokia among others.

Despite this, MWC organisers GSMA have maintained that the event will begin on June 28 and conclude on July 1 as planned.

Visitors to MWC will have to observe strict health and safety protocols throughout the event and the GSMA says it has a “multi-layer health and safety plan” in place.

Spain remains on the UK’s amber list for now, with those returning to the UK required to quarantine for 10 days but this list is expected to see changes on June 7.

Spain’s tourism minister told Sky News that he expects the country to be added to the green list in the next UK government review.
