Pandemic accelerates vendor’s push into enterprise management space

Apple has taken a step into the Mobile Device Management (MDM) space with the acquisition of device management firm Fleetsmith.

Fleetsmith is a San Francisco-based company founded in 2016 that provides cloud-based management software to Apple’s portfolio of Macs, iPhones, iPads and Apple TVs. Its sofware allows for remote device set-up, tracking and security.

A statement from Fleetsmith co-founders Zack Blum, Jesse Endahl and Kenneth Kouot said: “Our shared values of putting the customer at the centre of everything we do without sacrificing privacy and security, means we can truly meet our mission, delivering Fleetsmith to businesses and institutions of all sizes, around the world.”

In recent earnings calls, Apple’s leadership has highlighted the need to respond to changing demands in the enterprise space, especially given the ongoing changes to working habits brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. iPhones are an ever-popular mobile device for enterprise, and 451 Research showed that Apple is a top three PC vendor to the enterprise space.

The acquisition of Fleetsmith will enable companies with Apple devices to better onboard new workers remotely and maintain their devices.
