Birthday honours list recognises Carphone Warehouse founder for services to the mobile phone industry and charity

The founder and chairman of The Carphone Warehouse was today (June 16) knighted in the Queens Birthday Honours list for services to the mobile phone industry and charity.

Dunstone set up Carphone Warehouse 23 years ago with a £6,000 bank loan working out of a flat in Marylebone.

Since then the company has grown to become one of the largest mobile phone retailers in the UK with more than 800 retail stores, employs more than 6,00 staff and  said to be worth around £1.7 billion.

The firm is also a key player internationally through its Phone House brand, based in a number of European countries including Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Holland, Portugal and Sweden.

Dunstone is also chairman of The Prince’s Trust charity, to help improve the live of young children in the UK.

Dunstone said: “Whilst I’ve been fortunate and privileged to have experienced success and recognition during that time, I cannot think of a more thrilling and humbling experience than this.

“I  want to share this recognition with my colleagues at Carphone Warehouse and TalkTalk who have done such a fantastic job over the years in the service of customers.  This award is as much for them as it is for me.”
