The retailer says the service, which launches today (May 17), is a response to the increasing popularity of online shopping

Carphone Warehouse has launched a service allowing prepay customers to upgrade online, the first of its kind in the UK.

From today (May 17) prepay customers who have been with a major network for a minimum of six months can upgrade via the retailer’s website.

Discounts of between 10 per cent and 50 per cent on handsets including the Nokia 620, Samsung Ace and Xperia E can be claimed by entering a phone number to generate a savings code, to be applied at checkout.

For example, the upgrade price of the Nokia 620 has been reduced by 12 per cent to £139.95 (see more below).

Carphone Warehouse said the “booming” popularity of mobile devices and online purchasing has led to increasing demand for easy-to-use shopping services.

Head of prepay Russell Parr said: ““We know from our own research that our time-poor customers are looking for new ways to save money and that many prefer to have the option to shop online at their convenience.

“We have developed the online upgrade service to ensure that all our pre-pay customers get the best value deal, whether they choose to buy online or in store. Being the first retailer in the UK to launch a service like this and the only retailer to stock all the networks who offer an upgrade service, we are continuing to provide the best deals out there to all our customers and making upgrading to a new phone as easy as ever.”
