CHN: Dell confirms China smartphone

PC manufacturer Dell confirmed this month that it was preparing to enter the smartphone business by launching an Android-based smartphone in conjunction with China Mobile.

The handset demonstrated with China Mobile has been described as a “proof-of-concept prototype”, but Dell did not disclose further details or timing.

Dell had previously ruled out entering the handset market as it was too competitive and profit margins were too slim, however analysts said the manufacturer reconsidered after realising it would be a good move to sell a full range of personal computing devices.

Dell has already partnered with AT&T in the US and Vodafone and TeliaSonera in Europe to sell netbooks, so presumably there are avenues to also sell smartphones into these channels.
