Newly-merged retailer says 20 per cent of its combined head office staff will be leaving between May and October 2015

Dixons Carphone has announced that it is cutting 400 head office jobs, with the move expected to be completed between May and October 2015.

The firm’s chief executive Seb James said many of the employees leaving would be Dixons staff who were unwilling to make the move from Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire to Carphone Warehouse’s head office in Acton, west London.

It added that a further 400 jobs could go as it examines whether to restructure other parts of the business across Europe, including its Dutch, German and Portuguese operations.

Despite this Dixons Carphone, which employs some 40,000 people across the continent, said it still expected to generate new jobs overall, potentially adding 800 new roles as it expands.

The news comes after the company revealed its financial results for the 31 weeks to November, which James called a “barnstorming performance.”

Revenue in the UK and Ireland increased by six per cent year-on-year to £2.95 billion, while profits were up 30 per cent to £78 million.
