Dunstone behind the counter for CPW’s 100th Wireless World launch

Carphone founder serves customers as first ever store becomes the 100th shop to adopt Wireless World format

Carphone Warehouse has opened its 100th Wireless World store on Marylebone High Street. The opening significant as the store was the very first Carphone shop to open in the UK.

The Wireless World format aims to provide more connectivity products such as tablets to customers and Carphone wants its entire retail estate to convert to this format by by 2016.

Mobile News reported earlier this month that the company would convert 450 of its stores to this format by March 2012.

The opening of the new Marylebone store was attended by Carphone founder and chairman Charles Dunstone and Best Buy Europe CEO Andrew Harrison.

Dunstone (pictured) celebrated the launch of the store by serving customers as he had done when the store opened 21 years ago.

The opening coincided with Carphone’s stocking of the new HP Touchpad which arrived in its stores today.

Dunstone said Carphone which turned over £1.2 million in its first year – based mainly on sales of the analogue Nokia 101 (pictured left) – had a come a long way since then. The company turned over £3.5 billion at the end of the last financial year.

He also paid tribute to the company’s employees and said the Carphone brand would continue to exapnd.

“Revisiting our first ever store really shows just how far we have come in 21 years,” Dunstone said.

“We’ve seen some fantastic products pass through our stores, but the real heroes are our employees.

“With the widest and best range of technologies available and customer service initiatives like ‘Walk Out Working’ and ‘Network Price Promise’, we’re ensuring we continue to inspire and guide in this connected world, making people’s lives better through technology.”
