P4u management had phones temporarily disconnected on Monday as they were breaking news of future to staff

EE has been forced to apologise after the operator disconnected the phones of 552 members of Phones 4u staff while senior management was informing staff of their future with the retailer.

The UK’s largest operator said that a member of staff in its collections team heard the news that Phones 4u had gone into administration and temporarily barred the account, against protocol.

The bar was put on the account at 3:15pm on Monday with Phones 4u staff unable to use their phones for 49 minutes.

A statement from EE said: “As a result of a mistaken and unauthorised action by an individual, some members of the team at Phones 4u were briefly disconnected for 49 minutes yesterday afternoon.

“The team was reconnected as quickly as possible, and we are deeply sorry to those who were affected at what was a difficult time. We are investigating the matter thoroughly, and will take appropriate action.”

A spokesperson for EE confirmed that the investigation has now been completed but said the firm cannot reveal what action, if any, had been taken against the member of staff involved.
