The CEO of the telecoms giant said that finding a business case for 5G is proving difficult

BT CEO Gavin Patterson has claimed that he, and other operator CEOs are unclear as to how to build a business model around the roll out of 5G mobile signals.

Speaking at the Huawei Global Mobile Broadband Forum, Patterson said that 5G differs from 3G and 4G that have come before because, at the time, connection speeds were either non-existent or slow.

The BT CEO that carriers needed to make a “significant investment” in order to build a business case but agreed with others that mobile broadband would sit at the heart of the roll out of 5G.

Speaking at the forum, he said: “I talk to other CEOs around the world in this space and we’ve all been struggling a little bit making the business case work.

“If you look from 3G to 4G, the case was underpinned by going from what was a pretty poor internet experience to one which was really opening up the potential of the internet to mobile but we haven’t found that yet for 5G”
