The decision has been made following a government u-turn to ban Huawei from the UK’s 5G networks by 2027

Huawei has confirmed that it will restructure its UK Enterprise business, with up to 20 jobs set to be cut.

According to the vendor, 20 of its 50 staff are now in a consultation period.

The decision follows the recent pressure on the vendor by the UK government that led to Huawei being banned from helping to build the UK’s 5G networks.

A decision was made by the government for removal of all Huawei equipment from 5G networks by 2027. In a statement, a Huawei spokesman said: “Our Enterprise business is to focus its operations in the UK in order to deliver fewer products in a better way.

“Unfortunately, this means a number of roles are no longer required; however, we hope to reposition colleagues who are affected elsewhere in the business. We will continue to provide full service and maintenance to existing customers for the life cycle of our products.”

A recent Huawei-commissioned report by analyst firm Assembly Research estimates that the removal of Huawei from the UK’s 5G rollout will cost the economy £18.2 billion.

The report states that the stripping of Huawei equipment will delay the UK’s overall 5G rollout considerably and impact its leadership position through 2022 and 2023.
