The P40 and P40 Pro will be available for purchase from April 7

Huawei has taken the wraps off its flagship P40 smartphone series, with all three handsets coming with 5G capability.

The launch which was held via a live stream on YouTube due to the coronavirus outbreak, showcased the P40, P40 Pro and for the first time in the series, P40 Pro+.

The event had initially been due to take place in Paris, like last year’s P30 series launch.

Huawei consumer business group CEO Richard Yu presented the launch and also revealed that the phones will use Huawei’s own HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) alongside its EMUI 10.1 OS, following last year’s Google ban.

Pricing

Pricing for the phones start at £699 for the P40 (8GB RAM and 128GB storage), while the P40 Pro (8GB RAM and 256GB storage) £899 and both phones will be available from April 7.

Both the P40 and P40 Pro are available in five colours, with glossy finishes in white, blue and black, plus matte glass finishes in gold and silver.

Huawei has confirmed the P40 Pro will be available through Three, Carphone Warehouse, Virgin Mobile and selected retailers initially in the ‘silver frost’ and black colours.

While the P40 will launch through Carphone Warehouse in ‘silver frost’ and with Virgin and other selected retailers in black.

Pricing and availability for the P40 Pro+ will be confirmed in due course said Huawei, with an excepted release date in June, and a price close to €1,399.

This handset comes with a nano-tech ceramic back panel, and is available in either white or black.

Camera setup

This year’s line up focused heavily on photography with the latest edition, the P40 Pro+ featuring a penta-camera setup, consisting of five cameras, that also includes a 100x SuperZoom.

Like last year’s P30 Pro, this year’s P40 Pro has a quad camera setup that includes 5x optical zoom, 10x hybrid zoom and 50x maximum digital zoom, with the P40 model using a triple camera.

All three phones are 5G ready thanks to Huawei’s Kirin 990 5G chipset, and also support WiFi 6 Plus technology which offers speeds of up to 2.4Gbps.

Huawei’s 40W wireless charging is also present in the series, with SuperCharge available on the P40 Pro+.

The P40 has a 3,800mAh battery, with both the P40 Pro and Pro+ having a 4,200mAh battery equipped.

Huawei Watch GT 2e and Huawei Music

During the launch Huawei also introduced an updated version of it’s Huawei GT Watch 2, with an updated version – the Huawei GT Watch 2e.

The watch will cost £159.99 and will be available from April 15 with selected retailers, with two new colours added in ‘mint green’ and ‘lava red’.

It features over 100 different workout modes and has an upgraded health tracking system. It also has a battery that Huawei says lasts for up to two weeks on one charge.

The vendor also launched its own music streaming service ‘Huawei Music’ in Europe, which is able to be downloaded from the Huawei App Gallery.

This service will cost a monthly fee of €9.99, with the first three months free for those who subscribe to it before April 26.
