IFA: Sony launch world’s slimmest and lightest tablet

New Xperia Z3 Compact tablet is just 6.4mm and weighs 270g

Sony has unveiled its latest Xperia tablet device, the Z3 Tablet Compact  – which it claims is the lightest and slimmest tablet in existence.

The eight inch screen device, which is also water and dust proof (IP65/68 standard), weighs 270g and is just 6.4mm thick (comparison: iPad Air 7.5mm and 1.05lb).

Sony Mobile director of product marketing programme Calum MacDougall said: “Following on from the success of our Xperia Z2 Tablet, we’re continuing to expand our tablet portfolio with the launch of the no-compromise compact tablet.”

Features on the Android 4.4 device includes an HD screen, 8.1 megapixel camera with Exmor RS to help with low light conditions, a 2.2 megapixel front-facing HD camera, Snapdragon 801 processor,2.5 GHz quad-core and up to 13 hours playback.

It is also the worlds first and only tablet to include PS4 (Playstation 4) Remote Play, allowing games to be played and controlled over WiFi on the tablet when a TV screen is not available.

The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact will launch globally, in both LTE (4G) and Wi-Fi variants, from autumn 2014.

Carphone Warehouse, O2, EE, Phones 4u and Vodafone have all confirmed they will be stocking the device with the former selling the device exclusively in Green, with Phone 4u stocking exclusively in white. Details on pricing have yet to be confirmed.
