New £199 HMD Nokia phone designed for user repairability

HMD Global has launched new £199 Nokia phone with user-repairable and replaceable screen, charging ports and battery.

The Nokia G42 5G can be repaired with iFixit replacement parts starting for £5 from iFixit.co.uk  including display at £44.99, battery at £22.99 and charging port at £18.99. iFixit was set up 20 years ago and now claims to have the largest online repair facility.

The new 5G phone is made with 65 per cent recycled back cover and boxed in FSC-certified mixed packaging.

“The G42 is a continuation of our repairability journey which is now a fundamental part of the way we design smartphones.” said Lars Silberbauer, CMO of HMD Global.

iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens, :“Our partnership with HMD Global is turning the tide in favour of self-repairs. This is not just about providing parts; it’s about seeding the DIY ethos among consumers and signalling that the era of self-service repairs is truly upon us.”

The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480+ 5G Mobile Platform and has a 50MP camera and 6.56” HD+ display.

HMD claims a 3-day battery life that can keep 80 per cent of its original capacity after 800 full charging cycles, or four years of charges.
