Nimans provided accessories for a community centre being built by the team behind the BBC’s DIY SOS programme

Nimans has teamed up with the BBC’s DIY SOS to build a new mini village for army veterans and their families.

The unified comms distributor is working with the BBC program to help turn 60 houses on a derelict street in Manchester into a brand new mini village. The team behind the show, led by presenter Nick Knowles, has already started work on the homes in Canada Street and New Street in Newton Heath, an urban area of Manchester. Some houses will become shared properties for unemployed veterans learning new skills at a nearby college.

Cabling, a data cabinet and other accessories have been provided by Nimans to one of its customers, CIA 200, who is helping to create a community centre in the village. CIA 2000 specialises in the installation of data cabling and components.

“We received a call from CIA who helping create an office in the community centre by installing cabling for communications,” said Nimans chairman Julian Niman. “They asked if we could donate some equipment and we were delighted to help such a worthy cause especially as we have ex-military personnel within our business.”

Presenter Nick Knowles said: “These young men have gone off to different parts of the world and had to see extremely difficult things. They didn’t choose to do it, they go and do what they have been asked.

“Having done what we have asked them, they find themselves on the streets. This community is making it happen and housing them. Manchester, and companies such as Nimans and CIA 2000, should be very proud of themselves.”

The work is planned for completion on September 21 and the programme will be shown in October on BBC One.
