The operator predicts 5G to reduce 269 megatonnes of carbon by 2035

O2 has claimed 5G will play role in the UK’s battle against carbon emissions for the future.

The operator says that advances in mobile technology will contribute massively towards the UK becoming Net Zero by 2050.

Research carried out by O2 as part of its ‘A greener connected future’ report predicts significant reductions in carbon emissions, enabled through smart technology.

In fact the application of 5G through connected technology, such as smart grids and autonomous vehicles could save up to 269 megatonnes of CO2 by 2035.

For context the entire emissions produced by England was 280 megatonnes in 2018.

Efficiency

Utility companies and the home energy sector are tipped to be among the industries vital to reducing emissions.

According to O2 5G has the applications in place to allow for greater efficiency for energy suppliers, with smart technology forecasted to reduce 181 megatonnes of carbon emissions from these sectors.

O2 CEO Mark Evans said: “Ultrafast connectivity can play a significant part in rebuilding Britain whilst helping to green the economy, and at O2 we are committed to playing our part.

“If we invest now, there is a real opportunity for Britain to become a leading adopter of 5G and unleash the power of connected solutions to build a greener future for generations to come.”

O2 has delivered 5G to 60 sites across the UK as of June, with the operator ahead of schedule.

The operator aims to reach 70 sites by the end of the year.
