Ofcom consults on removing 2G and 3G from indoor signal boosters

Staff Reporter
October 27, 2023

Ofcom is holding a consultation over its plan to overhaul the licensing and configuration regulations governing customer-installed indoor mobile phone boosters.

Current regulations require indoor 4G repeaters designed must also support 2G and 3G to ensure an emergency signal is always available.

But, as 3G and 2G signals are scheduled to be switched off, some signal boosters are already being manufactured without 2G and 3G capability, Ofcom is considering whether the 2022 regulations for 4G repeaters to support 2G and 3G are necessary.

In 2018 Ofcom authorised users to self-install signal boosters without the need for a wireless telegraphy licence provided they comply with the Wireless Telegraphy (Mobile Repeater) (Exemption) Regulations.

Ofcom’s consultation sets out proposals to amend the Regulations and update the terms relating to in-vehicle repeaters to enable the amplification of signals in the 700 MHz band, and to make them “technology-neutral”.

This consultation closes on December 4
