The coronavirus pandemic has led to IT spending to decline in 2020

IT spending in EMEA is projected to pass $1 trillion dollars in 2021, as the world continues to adapt to the coronavirus pandemic.

Analyst firm Gartner forecasts that spending will total $1.075 trillion ( £820 billion) next year. This is an increase of 2.8 per cent from 2020.

IT spending is expected to drop 6.5 per cent in the region for this year.

The forecast was revealed during Gartner’s virtual IT Symposium/XPO EMEA event.

Gartner chief forecaster John-David Lovelock said: “The combined effects of Brexit and the COVID-19 public health interventions will cause IT spending in EMEA to decline in 2020.

“Before the pandemic, most organisations moved their digital strategies forward at a steady pace.”

Spending

According to Gartner’s forecast enterprise software (6.1pc) and data centre systems (4.1pc) will see the highest levels of growth next year.

Device spending will also creep up to 1.7pc, up from the decline of 15.1pc this year.

Thin and light notebooks are projected to grow 10pc, while desktop-as-a-service platforms are to increase 60pc in EMEA in 2021.

“The pandemic has forced employers to adopt remote working, turning it into a strategic workforce policy,” said Gartner research vice president Ranjit Atwal.

“Mobile PCs are a necessity for remote work and EMEA organizations will re-focus some spending on mobile PCs.”

In the UK next year, remote workers are tipped to represent 48pc of its workforce, only behind the U.S. which will account for 52pc.
