Former EE chief will join Swiss operator on May 9 after he left EE following BT’s buyout

Former EE CEO Olaf Swantee has been appointed the new CEO at Swiss Telco Sunrise Communications.

Swantee stepped down as EE boss in January following the completion of BT’s £12.5 billion takeover, but has stayed on at the operator in an advisory role.

He will take up the top job at Sunrise on May 9, replacing current CEO Libor Voncina who is set to step down.

“For us this is an ideal transition after the fantastic work done by Libor, who made the company fit again and floated it on the stock market,” said Sunrise chairman Lorne Somerville, in a statement.

“Olaf Swantee is a successful leader who is Swiss, sensitive to the requirements and opportunities of our market and who has successfully managed telecommunications and mobile service operators in several European countries.”

Somerville himself will also step down, as he announced he would not seek re-election to his position as chairman, instead being replaced by former UBS chairman Peter Kurer.
