Carphone says it will not pass on cost of MTR’s to its customers as it launches the “lowest ever” prepay deals in the UK through Talkmobile
Carphone Warehouse says it will not increase the prices of its MVNO Talkmobile tariffs despite the impact of mobile termination rates to its revenues.
Regulator Ofcom slashed Mobile Termination Rates (MTRs), the charges that operators make to each other to connect calls to other networks in April.
MTR’s are worth in excess of £200 million to operators and around 80 per cent of this will be removed by 2015 when the final reductions are in place. This has led to operators Everything Everywhere, O2 and Vodafone to cut subsidies from their prepay handsets to recover a percentage of the costs.
Carphone Warehouse claims other MVNO’s and operators are also increasing text, voice and data charges.
But it said it will not be increasing costs, with customers on its Talkmobile ‘Essentials’ prepay tariff will continue to pay 8p per minute for calls and 4p per text message. It said Virgin charges 26p per minute, Tesco Mobile 25p per minute and Asda 10p per minute.
Carphone is offering £2 free airtime to customers porting their number on to one of its Talkmobile tariffs during August also.
Carphone Warehouse has also launched a number of new SIM-only Talkmobile monthly tariffs, which it claims are the cheapest available in the UK, starting from £1 per month.
The ‘SIMple’ £1 tariff, which is only available during August, requires customers to commit to a £1 per month rolling contract to receive 25 minutes and 50 texts.
Other one-month rolling SIM only tariffs include 100 minutes and 100 texts for £5.11 per month and 200 minutes, 500 texts and 500MB of data for £8 per month.
A six month deal for £8 per month offers 300 minutes, 1,000 texts and 500MB of data is also available.
