Around 150,000 people signed up to the on-demand TV service in the first three months of the year

TalkTalk added 150,000 new subscribers to its TV service YouView in the first three months of 2013.

YouView set top boxes are manufactured by Chinese telecommunications company Huawei, and allow users to pause, rewind and record up to 4,000 shows from 70 channels and catch-up on shows from the past seven days.

The service launched in September 2012 and this year’s spike in take-up brings total customer numbers to over 230,000.

TalkTalk said three-quarters of those signing up are upgrading from Freeview and were people who “previously resisted on=demand services because they were unwilling to commit to costly, long-term contracts.”

Chief executive Didi Harding said: “We have the UK’s fastest growing TV service and our customers clearly appreciate it is great value for money.

“We believe, over time, that three-quarters of our customer base will take our TV offer. It is a brilliant way to start the pay-TV journey, particularly for families seeking great value mass-market entertainment.”
