MD for the company eyes up opportunity to increase market share

Rugged manufacturer The Toughphone is offering a year’s free insurance with latest tablet the Defender Tab 4, in the hope of spurring sales and taking market share from the segment’s leaders.

The device, which is available for pre-order on The Toughphone’s website ahead of a November 2 launch, is offered in both Windows 10 and Android 10 versions at a starting price of £736 and £699, respectively, with two years’ warranty.

The Toughphone’s managing director Stephen Westley is hoping that these prices can undercut more mainstream competition.

“The rugged tablet market is a growth industry, but you’re looking at £1,000 to £2,000 from the big brands like Panasonic and Getac – so we think we can grab some market share,” he said.

Wesley added that The Toughphone is in talks with distributors and resellers to widen the device’s penetration, and has received good feedback on its specs and pricing.

Specs

Both variants of the Tab 4 have 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage, an 8-inch screen and a 3.5mm earphone jack, as well as coming with a strap on the back.

The Windows version runs on the Intel Cherry Trail Z8350 chipset with a 10,000mAH battery, 2MP front camera and 5MP rear camera, while the Android version uses a MediaTek Helio P60 chipset and has a 9,800mAh battery, 13MP rear camera and 5MP front camera.

Both variants can be augmented with accessories such as a barcode scanner, 4G module or NFC module, giving businesses the flexibility to tailor them to their needs.

“A barcode scanner can cost around £100 on top of a device and nine out of 10 projects don’t need one –so there’s no need to build one in as standard and bump the price up,” said Westley. “It’s a build-your- own solution for what you need.”
