Pre-sale figures for first day reported to be more than double the number for 4S last year

Apple has announced over two million customers have ordered the iPhone 5 worldwide in the first 24 hours of pre-sale, more than double the 1m that pre-ordered the 4S when it was announced last year.

The device, which was announced last week, is released on September 21 in the UK with Apple stores selling the handset at 8am and giving customers a free service to set up their email and other settings on the new OS.

Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller said: “iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal.”
