The broadband provider is targeting 15 million gigabit-premises by the end of 2021

Virgin Media has become the UK’s biggest gigabit broadband provider in the UK.

This comes after the provider close to a million new premises with its next-generation connectivity.

The broadband provider has now rolled out its gigabit service to 3.6 million premises across the country.

It means that the provider has overtaken BT’s Openreach to lead the battle for the UK’s largest ultrafast provider.

Homes in Leeds, Bradford and Glasgow have become the latest locations to receive the ultrafast speeds. This has added an additional 957,000 premises for the provider.

This follows Edinburgh and Liverpool last month, with Virgin Media eyeing up 15 million premises across the UK by the end of next year.

The average speeds available with the gigabit broadband is 1,140Mbps.

According to analysis from thinkbroadband, 17 out of the top 20 local authorities for gigabit coverage in the UK is served by Virgin Media.

Ambitious

Virgin Media CEO Lutz Schüler said: “We set out an ambitious target to roll-out gigabit speeds across our entire network of 15 million homes by the end of next year, and we’re on track to deliver that promise.

“Providing next-generation connectivity across the country is a mission that is increasingly important as the role of our services to everyday lives and the economy has never been clearer.”

Other cities that are covered by Virgin Media’s gigabit network include Southampton, Manchester, Reading, Birmingham and Coventry.

The government has set a target for all UK premises to be served by gigabit speeds by 2025.
