This completed rollout delivers a huge boost to the government’s 2025 broadband target.
Virgin Media O2 has announced it has completed its gigabit upgrade and is claiming its role as the UK’s largest gigabit provider.
The company finished its rollout on the last 1.1 million homes and now 15.5mn homes connected to its network can access gigabit speeds of 1,130Mbps.
Virgin Media O2 is the only provider to complete a full gigabit upgrade in just two years and offers broadband 22x the national average.
This enables households to do more on multiple devices at the same time, and is ready to support future technologies such as the metaverse.
Virgin Media O2 chief executive officer Lutz Schüler said: “Having reached this major milestone in just two years, we’re doubling down on our mission to upgrade the UK by continuing to innovate and invest in our network to support the technologies of tomorrow – there’s no slowing down at Virgin Media O2.”
Digital Secretary Nadine Dorries added: “We must ensure that rural areas are not left behind, which is why alongside industry’s roll out we’re investing up to £5 billion to make top-of-the-range speeds available in hard-to-reach communities.”
Demand for connectivity
PP Foresight Tech, Media and Telco analyst Paolo Pescatore offered his thoughts on the matter: “Not everyone will demand gigabit connectivity.
“As restrictions ease many households will be evaluating their current telecoms and media set-up, some will consolidate and look to move services.
“Despite this, supremacy with in-home connectivity is fast emerging as a key battleground for all providers.
“People’s insatiable appetite for always on connectivity is showing no signs of slowing down, meaning more and new emerging devices in the home will need to be connected all the time; requiring better connections throughout the home; something that is proving to be an important area for households.”
Gig1 broadband is available to new and existing customers with prices starting from just £62 per month on an 18 month contract- with a guaranteed price freeze for at least 24 months.
