The telco has set an ambitious target to connect 15 million homes by the end of 2021

Virgin Media has continued the rollout of its gigabit home broadband service with Edinburgh and Liverpool the latest cities to receive the hyper-fast service.

It means that Virgin Media has now rolled out gigabit broadband to more than 2.7 million properties nationwide.

The service will cover over 600,000 homes, with Virgin Media aiming to connect 15 million homes by the end of 2021.

The two cities join Southampton, Manchester, Reading, Birmingham and Coventry in being gigabit connected.

Residents in Edinburgh and Liverpool will be able to access average download speeds of 1.1Gbps.

Edinburgh has also become the first Scottish city to be covered by Virgin’s gigabit broadband.

Almost a fifth of Virgin Media’s network is covered by gigabit broadband, with the Government setting a target for all UK premises to be gigabit by 2025.

Virgin Media COO Jeff Dodds said the telco will rollout its service to more cities in the second half of the year.

“Through continued investment, we’ll be bringing this next-generation connectivity to many more cities this year as we rollout gigabit broadband across our entire network at a speed and scale unmatched by anyone else.”
