5G can offer higher speeds, faster downloads and far greater capacity for holidaymakers and businesses in the airport

Vodafone has deployed its 5G network to five of the UK’s largest airports to give travellers and businesses faster, more reliable data.

The technology has been installed by Exchange Communications, and it is now live across George Best Airport in Belfast and Newcastle International Airport.

Dedicated 5G systems are also being installed in Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow Airports.

The technology has the potential to support a range of airport services such as contactless check-in and digital passport controls.

Andrea Dona, UK Network and Development Director at Vodafone, said: “Millions of passengers use these airports every year, so we’re delighted to be able to give them fast data speeds, however busy it gets. Meanwhile, each of these airports have an important role to play in their region and their local economy.  So it’s great to be able to supply the connectivity they need to continue to grow and succeed.”

Tom Sime, CEO at Exchange Communications, added: “The airports are a pivotal part of the economy supporting an ecosystem of companies employing thousands of people. The deployment of 5G will both futureproof the airports connectivity and enable new services which will support the airport, its customers, and those businesses. The airports will be the UKs most connected companies.”
