The trials will cover 4G and 5G development across the south of England

Vodafone has partnered with Ericsson to develop technology designed to improve its 4G network and pave the way for 5G across the south of England.

The pair will make use of what they call ‘Massive MIMO’ and ‘Carrier Aggregation’ technology. Put simply, Massive MIMO uses advanced antennas to improve radio signal and capacity. Carrier Aggregation takes advantage of different frequencies for a similar purpose to Massive MIMO. Vodafone and Ericsson will use the trials for both commercial and business deployment as part of the agreement. Other areas of focus include the Internet of Things (IoT), enabling the monitoring and use of it in real time.

Vodafone UK technology director Jorge Fernandes said: “We are continually enhancing our network to optimise performance and give our customers the best possible experience. We will continue to expand our 4G network and develop greater capabilities for our customers.”

Ericsson head of Europe and Latin America Arun Bansal added: “We are working with Vodafone UK to evolve its 4G network and test new 5G technologies. Together we will enable ubiquitous connectivity for their users that enable entirely new experiences, as well as monitoring and control of IoT in real time.”
