Vodafone is to launch two new branded prepay smartphones to help give customers an “affordable” way to access the internet

Vodafone will launch its two new affordable smartphone handsets, the Vodafone 553 (pictured) touchscreen slider and the Android Vodafone 945, in the build up to Christmas.

Vodafone said it had to date sold 26 million branded handsets across all its country operations.

Features on the Vodafone 360 powered 553 includes a QWERTY keyboard, rotatable screen, two megapixel camera, FM radio, bluetooth and expandable memory up to 8GB using a MicroSD card. The device will be available in black, white, silver or pink.

The Vodafone 945 touch screen handset, an update to the Android powered 845 launched in April, will include Android 2.1 software, five megapixel camera, WiFi and expandable memory up to 32GB with MicroSD card.

In addition Vodafone will also launch a “refreshed” version of the Vodafone 543 Miss Sixty clamshell handset, which will now include a ‘pre pay balance indicator’ which will be displayed on the 2.4 inch at all times.

Prices and exact launch dates have yet to be confirmed by Vodafone.

Vodafone group director of terminals Patrick Chomet said: “We work hard to take the best, most relevant and exciting market trends and make them available at a great price to customers across the Vodafone footprint.

“In this instance, we’ve developed the Vodafone 553 and 945 to give customers affordable, fast access to the mobile internet data services that are seeing such growth in popularity – in fact, within two years we expect to see 70% of our mature market sales going to smartphones.”
