Distributor’s three-strong team will work together on partner enablement and programmes designed to drive reseller and retailer sales.
Tech Data UK has created a new dedicated wearables team to drive retailer and reseller sales in the fast-growing market.
The Basingstoke-based distributor has set up a three-strong unit to take oversee wearables, a market that CCS Insight predicts will be worth $25 billion (£16.9 billion) globally by 2019.
The team includes former Netgear development manager Mike Cain, who has been promoted to the role of business development manager for wearables.
He is joined by Mica Jakins, who moves over from her role as senior category manager within Tech Data’s consumer electronics division to a similar role in wearables. Stacey Bliss completes the team as assistant category manager.
Tech Data director of product marketing Mark Glasspool said: “The formation of the dedicated wearables team is a clear sign of our commitment to this market. We believe there will be enormous potential to develop our business in this area.
“The job of our new team will be to identify and address the opportunities and bring all the strengths and benefits we have to offer to bear in ensuring success for our partners and customers.”
Potential
The number of wearable devices sold is set to triple to 245 million units within the next four years, according to CCS, spurred by devices such as the Apple Watch, which went on sale in April.
Tech Data already offers a number of wearables from vendors such as Samsung, Motorola, HTC, Alcatel Onetouch, ASUS and Acer, and said it is planning to expand its portfolio in the near future.
The potential extends to all areas of the market, Glasspool added. “This is not only a consumer opportunity, there are going to be applications in the enterprise and SMB markets and also in the public sector.
“With the clear sales focus we have on each of these segments, and the Wearables team co-ordinating our efforts, Tech Data is well-placed to lead the way in developing this exciting and rapidly expanding new market.”
It is also sponsoring the upcoming Mobile News “Wearables and Accessories; Analysing Opportunities” conference, which will be held in London on November 16,
