Manufacturer more than doubles year-on-year sales to pass Samsung

Huawei became the second-highest selling smartwatch manufacturer in Q1 2020, according to new research from IDC.

The Chinese manufacturer increased shipments year-on-year from 1.2 million to 2.6 million, a growth of 118.5 per cent, which saw it leapfrog Samsung to second place and increase its market share from 6.4 per cent to 15.6 per cent.

Samsung’s market share held firm year-on-year at 10.8 per cent, but its shipments declined from two million to 1.8 million. Apple maintained first place, and mildly increased its market share from 25.4 per cent to 26.8 per cent, but its shipments declined from 4.6 million to 4.5 million.

Garmin and Huami compose the rest of the top five, with their respective Q1 2020 shipments of 1.3 million and one million constituting year-on-year increases from one million and 500,000 the previous year.

IDC said that Huawei’s success was due to its strong online presence and retailer ties, as well as its freshness in European and Latin American markets.
