Samsung’s mid-range devices rule the roost as Android goes ‘post-premium’

Samsung’s Galaxy A51 smartphone was the highest selling Android smartphone model globally in Q1 2020, according to research from Strategy Analytics.

The mid-range device‘s 4G variant shipped around six million models, accounting for 2.3 per cent of the 275 million Android phones shipped worldwide during the quarter.

Xiaomi’s Redmi 8 was the second-best seller, with a share of 1.9 per cent. The Samsung Galaxy S20+ was third, with 1.7 per cent, the only premium device in the top six, followed by the Galaxy A10s, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, and the Samsung Galaxy A20s.

Strategy’s associate director Juha Winter noted the dominance of affordable devices in the results, and anticipates further growth of the mid-range in a post-Covid economy.

“As mobile operators have reduced subsidies in recent years, and many countries are now tumbling into post-virus recession, smartphone consumers globally are becoming increasingly price-sensitive,” he said.

“They are seeking out new Android models that deliver the biggest bang for their buck – a further sign that many consumers want value-for-money devices with good enough specs at affordable prices. Android is entering a post-premium era.”
