The partnership is part of Three’s strategy to deliver the UK’s fastest 5G service

Three has awarded a multi-million pound contract to CityFibre to connect over a thousand mobile masts across the UK.

As part of the deal, CityFibre will connect an additional 1,300 key mobile masts across 59 towns and cities.

The telco provider is the UK’s third national digital infrastructure platform and will support Three attempt to provide the UK’s fastest 5G network.

Earlier this year CityFibre became the preferred provider of backhaul connectivity outside of the capital, and has supported the rollout of 5G to more than 100 locations across the country.

This partnership will allow Three access to small cell access points throughout CityFibre’s city-wide networks.

This will help the operator ensure it has full fibre capacity in place to deal with the heavy demand of 5G services in busy urban areas.

Investment

Three UK COO Susan Buttsworth has said the partnership will help the operator to support increased mobile data demand.

“We are increasing investment across our network to meet the ever increasing demand for data by UK consumers.

“Fibre backhaul is a vital part of a reliable network experience and this investment will mean better connectivity for our customers across the UK.”

The deal with CityFibre will see Three’s commitment to full fibre infrastructure more than treble.

CityFibre CEO Greg Mesch added: “We are excited to deepen our support for Three’s ambitious 5G rollout.

“It’s clear that the alignment of two national consumer and mobile digital infrastructure rollouts has huge benefits, not just for us, but for the cities and communities we are connecting.”
